My works discover the relations between music and art, when two elements- original music compositions and artworks come together as a full artwork and express the life of the artist and how art has inspired the artist to create both the work from the harmonic expression and colours from paintings. My works have experimented with many scenarios from the original storylines written by myself, when I tried to tie music and art together, through a story and expression. Then I invented the genre of “Drama fantasy”, with artworks accompanied by characters and has 5 movements with the orchestra and soloists.
The idea of putting art and music together was through a structure, which the art form can be expressed through a story developing, while the others can experience a story being told in an art form, while before the concept of “gesamtkunstwerk ( full artwork) was coined by the opera composer, Richard Wagner, who used the idea in most of his operas where he used the expressions in his dramatic works to reinforce his ideas of stage art. My idea of musicart was through my own expression, including my different genres of music, for example, chamber music works, piano solo works, dramatic works, orchestral works etc. As my idea was to express the voice of each character in each instrument to express a story, which presents the final form of art by presenting both visual and sound expression at one time.
Overall, I have also chosen to display a number of related themes of music artworks, as I combined the 4 important theme works together in this exhibition, where I choose to display imaginative stories and combined them together with the elements of music and art, which I have displayed my own original ideas through my compositions and paintings, as I believe I can use them both to express my theme and process of the artwork. Through my music composition, I have shown the voice inside my artworks, by listening to them one can experience the exchanging and connecting ideas between both the composer and artist.
In my 4 works display, I have shown the connection through the themes, as I have concentrated on my own memories and used my colours and musical language to paraphrase the memories in my head. Rather than depicting the events with absolute accuracies like a photograph or recording, I decided to translate those images into my own colour and music language, as a result, the outcome of my own artworks has presented as original personal works.
I presented 4 works related to music and artworks- “ A rainy day in Oxford”, “Moonlight”,“ The Hymns of Angels” and “ Christmas Fantasy”. Those 4 works have represented the 4 elements of myself, which is Travel, solitude, religion and Festive. In those themes, I used different imaginative colours to express the flow of my emotions, and I paraphrase the images through the process of painting. Through the music work, I used different instrumentations to create the different sound effects, including a string quartet, full orchestra, choirs and piano. Through different instrumentation, it can create the atmosphere of the entire work, the orchestra has expressed the emotions through the grandiosity of sound, piano solo has expressed the feeling of solitude, as it expressed my identity as a pianist, by reflecting my own voice. Those work itself has spoken to a conclusion in the artist’s own life, through his multiple identities: Artist, composer and pianist. Also, by showing the process, I have also displayed my handwritten manuscripts, which have shown my mind when composing them, by displaying the work will reinforce my works in both music and artworks those are the elementary sketch of my work before I orchestrate and revising it, which belongs to the creation of a new idea and how it develops into a complete work.
Last but not the least, The main idea of my work, is to discover the relationship between music and art, through my own unique identity, I have combined the elements and turned it into a genre that defines art from a different perspective, where not just only discover the possibilities through the visual world, but also another experience entering the world of melodic lines, with expressive harmony through our ears. This is the outcome of “ Display in art, speak in music”, which is the main motto of my art practice.
